Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Stress Management, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Relaxation Techniques are considered to be the most effective anger management techniques. Anger management treatments are based on cognitive behavioral therapy and follow in a three step program. Firstly, the client learns to recognise situations that can possibly activate the feeling of anger. If a trigger can be avoided, the client can not only avoid undesirable outbursts, but also avoid inner conflict. Often anger occurs through thinking errors and irrational beliefs. Secondly, relaxation skills are taught as appropriate reactions to the recognised situations. Finally, role-play is used to exercise the application of the studied techniques for future anger-inducing situations. Successful interventions can cause not only a decrease of the external display of aggression, but also a reduction in the inner level of anger.
