COUNSELLING

The National Society of Hypnosis, Psychotherapy & Mindfulness

Counselling in Aylesbury, Milton Keynes, Amersham and Buckinghamshire

Counselling allows you to explore difficult feelings and talk about your problems with a trained and experienced professional. This can help you to deal with specific issues, deal with crisis, improve your relationships, or develop better ways of thinking, behaving and living.

The purpose of counselling is to help you understand your feelings and behaviour better and may be to change the way you think and behave. Counselling can help you resolve conflicts in your life or to gain greater confidence. Talking to a trained and experienced counsellor can help you look at problems from a different perspective and equip you with coping strategies to work through your issues.

Counselling includes:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Humanistic
  • Person-centred Therapy

Your Counsellor (Counselor - US spelling):

A good therapeutic relationship between you and your counsellor is an extremely important factor in the effectiveness of counselling. Your counsellor can help you develop an understanding of yourself, others and the world around you and will provide you with the support to work on the problems you experience and facilitating positive change.

Types of counselling:

  • Individual counselling (face-to-face)
  • Couples counselling
  • Telephone counselling
  • Email / internet / online counselling
  • Group counselling

You may be offered counselling as a short-term course of sessions over a period of weeks or months. There might be an agenda set for each session. At each session, your progress will be reviewed, so you can identify and acknowledge progress made. There will be times during your therapy where it is necessary to talk about feelings which are painful and difficult decisions, as counselling is a very personal process. Whatever you say during your counselling session is confidential, (subject to legal and ethical exceptions, and the fact that a Therapist will be in supervision.) Counsellors will offer guidance and support to help you through this process.

Counselling can be helpful in treating:

Depression, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), bereavement, addiction problems, relationship problems, stress and work-related issues, and low confidence.
