Emotional and Psychological trauma is a type of harm to the mind that happens as a consequence of a severely disturbing event.

If you’ve experienced a traumatic event, you may be battling with worrying emotions, difficult memories, or a sense of persistent fear. Alternatively you might feel emotionless, detached, and not able to trust other people. It can take a while to resolve a traumatic experience, get over the pain and feel safe again. But with the right treatment and support, you can speed your recovery, resolve the trauma and heal, whether the traumatic event happened yesterday or years ago.

Trauma is frequently the product of a tremendous amount of stress that goes beyond one's ability to handle or incorporate the emotions involved with that event. A traumatic experience includes one event, or recurring experiences with the sense of being overwhelmed. This can be delayed by weeks, years, or decades as the individual struggles to cope, leading to serious, long-term mental problems.

Trauma experienced in childhood increases the risk of future trauma.

Trauma experienced in childhood can have a serious and long-lasting effect. Traumatised children see the world as a terrifying and unsafe place. When childhood trauma is not resolved, this deep-seated sense of dread and powerlessness carries over into adulthood, setting the stage for further trauma.

Psychological symptoms of trauma:

  • Denial and Shock
  • Mood swings, Anger, Irritability
  • Self-blame, Guilt and Shame
  • Hopelessness and Sadness
  • Confusion and not being able to concentrate
  • Fear, Anxiety and Worry
  • Withdrawing from other people
  • Feeling  emotionally disconnected and  numb

Physical symptoms of trauma:

  • Nightmares and Insomnia
  • Racing heartbeat
  • Aches and pains
  • Agitation
  • Fatigue
  • Not being able to concentrate
  • Nervousness
  • Muscle tension

Treatment for Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Cognitive-behavioral therapy – trauma focused . Cognitive-behavioral therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma includes identifying disturbing thoughts about the traumatic experience, particularly thoughts that are irrational and exaggerated, and replacing them with more realistic and balanced thoughts.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) combines parts of cognitive behavioral therapy with eye movements or other forms of rhythmic, left-right stimulation. Eye movements are thought to work by “unfreezing” the brain’s information processing system, which is disturbed in times of extreme trauma.
